the Tumblr Queer Community is full of white supremacy, misconceptions, misogyny, and toxic masculinity. trans beauty standards are full of skinny white people who lean heavily towards trans women being feminine and trans men being masculine. It’s okay for trans people to lean heavily towards a certain gender presentation, be skinny, and/or be white. However, for it to be a beauty standard is not only exclusionary of POC but also towards those who present in gender nonconforming ways and/or those with different body types. As a feminine trans man of color who isn’t considered skinny, this needs to stop.

Gender may be fluid, but sexuality is not. Not in the same way. You can’t make up sexualities because you don’t want to identify with labels provided. It’s okay to not be into labels, but it’s not okay to create self-contradicting identity-erasing ones because you don’t want to identify yourself with one of the many sexualities that already exist. It lowkey gives lesbophobia in a lot of cases. Speaking of which, lesbian is not an umbrella term, Saphhic is. If you’re a bi person calling yourself a lesbian, relearn what lesbian means. You’re not a lesbian because you have woman-leaning attraction but are attracted to a man every once in a while, you’re sapphic.

In general, queer women should be praised just as much for embracing femininity as queer men. The tumblr queer community doesn’t care about lesbians unless they’re masc in any way.

Hey! Fantasy writers! Especially fantasy-romance writers! Listen to me.

If I had a nickel for every time I saw an art piece of a hot fantasy guy with dark hair, very tan skin, and swirly black tattoos on his upper body I’d have enough nickels to buy myself some ice cream.

Please, don’t just jump on trends when designing your characters, especially the love interest, especially if he’s a guy.

Make them vivid, make them memorable. Those are your characters! Your choices! Write for yourself first and the right audience will find your work. The “fantasy motorcyclist” thing is cute but more flavors are available.

Like, maybe make your love interest actually a POC instead of vaguely tanned with dark hair? Please???

Or make him a redhead. Or a blonde.

Give him a personality other than “I’m a moody tattooed hottie with nebulous daddy issues”. There are so many different ways to be masculine. Don’t be afraid of making your characters different.

Like at a glance, I know art of Eragon, Ganondorf, Legolas, and Jon Snow.

And if you choose to have a love triangle for the love of all that is holy don’t just simplify it to “will she choose the blond or the brunet?”

Oh, and can we stop making morally complex or evil-coded love interests have darker skin and hair than the goody-two-shoes love interest? Please? That’s a little gross. And honestly a little too simple. “Light good, dark bad” is crusty and boring and soooo overdone at this point. Why do you think that blond Joffrey was such a hit?

Unless you’re going to directly examine that sort of framework and the toxicity in that setting, let’s not.

Ok, I understand you're coming at this from a place of concern about children being radicalized by creeps online, and you feel like the Left is unwelcoming to those small boys, and I understand that. I really worry about it as well. The way fascists target children is really upsetting to me too which is why I wish racists and fascists were being de-platformed because that's what's going to put a stop to the Pewdipie to Nazi pipeline. Where I disagree is this idea that The Left isn't making space for boys or isn't being nice enough to them, because to me that's not an argument based in reality. First of all, the left is continuing to try to bring identity politics and critical race theory into schools only to be shut down by conservatives. We advocate for trans children constantly and that is going to help break down gendered roles in schools and help cis children just as much as trans children. We talk a lot about toxic masculinity and the ways it hurts men mentally. Outside of that, when we talk about prominent leftists, they're majority white and male. Leftist white men make up most of the democratic party. Leftist white men have written a lot of our books. When we move into internet spaces, yes there are Terfs who like to scream "kill all men" (though it should be noted they're really talking about trans women) but I've found tons of love and empathy for white men on our platforms, way more than women of color get. Yes, there are people here on the left who use their politics to justify harassing children, because we have a problem in our community of harassing everyone and justifying it with politics. We've harassed just as many trans kids off the internet for having different pronouns as we have twelve year old boys for using racial slurs. If being bullied by twitter leftists turned you into a Nazi, then all of the LGBT community would be fascists at this point. ((That's a larger conversation about online harassment in general.)) The reason fascists are making gains with white boys is because they're telling them that they're the most important person in the room. They're smarter and more special than any other group and when they abuse others, they're right too. The best analogy I can make is Pleasure Island from "Pinocchio". If you promise kids candy and no bed time and the ability to run around smashing whatever they like with no consequences, they're going to come flocking no matter how nice and understanding their families are. That's why bad actors need to be de-platformed, and this isn't an issue of the Left not being nice enough. The people I've seen pushing this point, like Vaush, are arguing that the way to bring boys (and by boys he's talking about the grown men who watch his channel) over to the Left and make them feel welcome in our community is The Pleasure Island approach. It's to ignore it when they make racist and sexist comments. It's to tell homophobic jokes that they'll laugh at. It's to not mention the ways they benefit off of white and male privilege because that's alienating. It's to turn a blind eye to slurs. It's to pretend that they're smarter than all the other people in the room because their politics are guided by logic and not silly emotions. It's the exact same argument conservatives are making right now about not allowing CRT in schools because it's going to make white kids "feel bad about themselves." But those conversations are super necessary to maintaining our community. We have to tell white boys that it's wrong to use racial slurs, and to harass women, even if that makes them feel bad, in the same way we need kids to eat their vegetables and go to bed on time.

But that's what the people who are making this argument want, they want women and poc and queer and trans people to shut up about harassment so we're not hurting straight cis white men's feelings. That's because in reality, their goal with this "think of the children" argument is to recenter the Left on cis straight white men, and allow them to dominate the conversation without push back. They're not worried about children, they're worried that they're no longer the most special boy in the room. Obviously, do not harass children no matter what they're saying. That should be a given. But the solution to radicalization is not to stop talking about bigotry and how white men continue to use bigotry as a tool to maintain power, it's to de-platform Nazi's and to fight back against conservatives who don't want trans acceptance and rape culture and anti-racism taught in schools. That's what's going to make the difference.

I could be wrong about myself, but i do think im willing to listen to any legitimate criticsm of the cr cast and crew. I def am hyperaware about the development of parasocial relationship.(C.C. that addresses things like "what can be done". Often "constructive criticism" just means criticism. C.c. means like...including what the person SHOULD have done , discussing what is acceptable, and talking about a problem while highlighting that while the person did it it was just a byproduct of a larger issue*)

But i was just thinking about how much criticism ignores the fact that..im pretty sure alot of this thry didnt ask for. Like u start this show and people start sending u thousands of dollars of free dolls and figures and handcrafted items and food and people obsess over you. U struggle to thank em and give back to the community. U even extend your show so u can try to show off the generocity and thank each person, but it becomes to much and so u have to thank the big ones and just shout out the rest but it CONTINUES and so u make a whole show once a month to show stuff off. U pay an associate to put up the TONS of fanart and BEG fans to submit it through proper channels so they can show ppl fans amazing work and credit you properly. And all while this is happening THOUSANDS of fans are talking shit about your wife and your friends and obsessing over their every move, harrassing you left and right and u have to use all your acting talent to address criticism and fans just being horrible people to you because u know if u treat people as they deserve it will villainize you.

Just...i cant imagine the stress they are under, and how afraid they probably are at doing or saying the wrong thing. And yet regardless they try to raise tons of money for disaster relief and speak openly against bigotry and hate on their platforms. Try to depict queerness in a wonderful light and take down toxic masculinity and showcase different cultures beuatifully and respectfully.

In his case there’s the whole Kamish trauma/survivor’s guilt package. So like, he’s not just Like That bc he’s an American White Fuckboy.

You need to be vulnerable with someone to recover from trauma, and Thomas Andre thinks he can’t afford to be vulnerable, so it’s impossible for him to deal with the Kamish thing. One of the ways to process trauma/get over shit is to ‘relive it but different,’ since like... part of the reason Trauma happens is that your brain goes ‘what happened was Unacceptable, we got to have a game plan for keeping it from happening again.’

Thomas would have lost all his comrades in the Kamish incident. The Scavengers are his de facto second guild, (with a meaningful name, gathering up what’s left after a disaster...) which is why when there’s an attack on one of its members Thomas’ frontal lobes are completely cut out of the decision making loop (like. this is a scientific thing).

When he fights Sung Jin-Woo Thomas again experiences fighting a terrifying powerful force of nature, except this time all his comrades are alive afterwards. (Except that guy, but fuck him, he put everyone else in danger.)

So yeah, it makes sense he stops being a hyper-aggressive asshole afterwards since the trauma isn’t making him irrationally angry while sabotaging his frontal lobes anymore, and part of the reason he was thumping his chest and being such a Massive Dick could have been a subconscious attempt to scare away threats to his tribe/guild.

Then he gives weapons made from Kamish’s fang (which he had bc it was still impaling him when the fight ended) to Sung Jin-woo. Symbolism!

first off, I'm not going to stop using the term TME. nothing will make me compromise on this. is it an imperfect term? sure, but it is a useful and necessary one. stop trying to take away the few tools trans women have for talking about our oppression.

before I move on, let's get something out of the way. I'm willing to admit that being white inherently means my understanding of racism and how it intersects with other forms of oppression will always be lacking, simply due to the fact that I've never experienced racism. I do my best to read theory written by feminists of color, but that fact still stands.

now then, I feel the need to point out that the crux of your argument is easily disproven by my original post. take, for example, your assertion that men of color are perceived as potential rapists of white women. this is very true! there is a long, bloody history of white women accusing black men of rape with the express purpose of getting them lynched. still today, this practice continues, as we see with israelis accusing palestinians of raping white women to justify their genocide. however, although I didn't go into detail, I already alluded to this in my post. consider for a moment why I stated that biological essentialism is a tool of white supremacy and compared it to phrenology. phrenology was just one of many excuses created to protect the "purity" of the white race. by establishing that men of color were biologically "inferior" due to having "less developed brains", they could easily be painted as "brutish and primitive savages" who were predisposed to rape and assault white women, and thus any and all violence against them could be justified. it sounds very similar to the biological essentialism I talked about in detail, doesn't it? so no, men of color are not oppressed because of their perceived heterosexuality and manhood; they're oppressed so that white people can hold power over them.

I also just find it bizarre how you claim that misandry exists when in your last two paragraphs you implicitly acknowledge that masculinity is rewarded. why would men of color "utilize manhood and heterosexuality to get by in a white-ruled world" if not for the fact that doing so resulted in material benefits? certainly, doing so comes at their own expense, but if doing so comes "especially at the expense of woc and queer poc", is that not still male privilege? is the "reason it's usually poor and middle-class workers who cling to manhood/masculinity and heterosexuality to toxic extremes" not because they're rewarded for doing so under the capitalist society they live in? because you clearly seem to understand that being a man, even when accounting for factors such as race and class, comes with privilege.

and that's really what I don't understand about this response. how can you clearly point out all these examples of male privilege, but you won't label them as such?

I find the notion that trans women's oppression is at least partially based on a systemic hatred of men and masculinity troubling for many reasons. the biggest reason, of course, is that misandry is not real no matter how you attempt to label or define it. but moreover, it's just flat out wrong.

it is true that many forms of transmisogyny consist of some form of misgendering. however, it's ludicrous to call it misandry just because the underlying implication is that the trans woman in question is really a man; if that were the case, then cis men and trans men would be subjected to the same oppression on the basis of their manhood. but no, the misgendering is always simply a cover for something else - something far more insidious.

if a trans woman is loud, outspoken, and argumentative, then she's accused of demonstrating her "male socialization". she's told she's guilty of "mansplaining". when a trans woman is jealous or clingy with her partner, she's accused of expressing "male entitlement" over them, and being "manipulative" and "controlling". when a trans woman is attracted to cis women and talks about her desire to have sex with them, she's accused of being "creepy" or "predatory". she's told she's being "misogynistic" by reducing women (cis women, or "real women" as is usually the implication in this scenario) to just their bodies and valuing them only for their worthiness as sex objects.

if you think about it, though, these arguments mirror regular old misogyny pretty closely! if a cis woman is loud, outspoken, and argumentative, then she's a "bitch", she's "bossy". she's told she needs to "know her place". when a cis woman is jealous or clingy with her partner, she's accused of being "crazy" and "obsessive". and indeed, when a cis woman is attracted to other cis women and talks about her desire to have sex with them, she's accused of being "creepy" or "predatory"!

so why, then, if these statements are really a form of misogyny, does the justification for them hinge on trans women's supposed "maleness"? the answer is simple: biological essentialism. this ideology, in no small part popularized in feminist and queer spaces by terfs, states that "biological males" are predestined by their very nature to prey on and dominate "biological females". and since trans women are "biologically male", it follows then that they are wolves in sheeps' clothing. any presumption of innocence or harmlessness is discarded, and trans women's actions are painted in a new light.

if you accuse a trans woman of being an infiltrator in women's spaces due to her supposed "maleness", then what you've effectively accomplished is the subjugation of an underclass of women. trans women are not considered deserving of respect, compassion, or dignity whatsoever. if you paint a trans woman as a threat to other women, then you can drum up as much outrage and violence against her as you want, and she will have no recourse. and the simple fact of the matter is that the easiest way to do this is to draw attention to her alleged proximity to "maleness".

perhaps you might be thinking that proximity to maleness being used as a justification for oppression implies that misandry actually is real. after all, aren't women of color, butch lesbians, and even black men also subjected to violence due to their perceived proximity to "maleness"?

I understand how one could make that mistake, but that notion fails to engage with the actual material reasoning behind the forms of oppression these groups face: they pose a threat to the cishet white man's absolute dominion. the root of these disparate but related forms of oppression, biological essentialism, is inherently a white supremacist, misogynistic, and conservative ideology. its purpose, much like its ilk, eugenics and phrenology, is to establish a hierarchy in society that places cishet white christian men at the top by asserting that they are inherently biologically superior to all others in every respect.

if you observe people's behavior, you can see that this ideology permeates almost every level of society. cishet white men are elevated to positions of authority without question; their motives are never scrutinized and criticized in the same way that trans women's are, or any of the other oppressed groups mentioned above. if one of these men is misogynistic, if he views women as mere sex objects to be controlled to suit his liking, he will not be punished for it; he is exercising the right that has been given to him by the society people like him have created through centuries of colonialism. even in queer spaces, men are regularly coddled, their misdeeds forgiven or excused for no real reason other than that many queer people have not questioned the assumptions they've internalized.

the notion that trans women are oppressed by misandry is laughable, really, because we are constantly made aware that, due to biological essentialism, TME people will always trust a man over us.

To say that Jimin wearing a shirt pants and slicked hair is an affront to his "gender expression" is unfounded and based on a series of assumptions. Anon 2: I support everyone's right to their own opinion. Having said that, projecting archetypes of exclusively 'feminine' or androgynous masculinity onto public figures, then expressing dissapointment when those figures look or behave in ways that fall outside of this paradigm can read as just as inhibiting and prohibitive as toxic masculinity itself. A human being is not a bare canvas on which to impose our own ideals of queer identity and gender performance.
